Describe how Nancy Lee's relationship with other people at her school helps her shape her changing attitude towards race and racial discrimination in the united states? minimum of 3 sentences Commonlit passage: One Friday Morning

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Even in the not-officially-segregated North, there was often a wide gulf between the color-blindness of the American dream and the racial discrimination in daily life, which, early in their lives, crushed the aspirations and dashed the hopes of promising young black Americans. In this story (published in 1941), celebrated poet, novelist, and playwright Langston Hughes (1902–67) describes such an incident in the life of a talented and proud American high school student, Nancy Lee Johnso.

why do people force their religion on others?

Answers

Because it gives them a sort of “authority” making others believe that they are the truthful ones and nobody else can be.
Many people believe that it is disrespectful to have different ideas than those of the religion that they follow. They want to show their entire faith to their God, by trying to have other people join them in their worship.

Imagine being in New York City and exploring all the city has to offer. Write a story about a character's adventure in New York City.

Answers

Answer:

It was a beautiful day in New York City.  The sun shone off of the giant skyscrapers. People in fancy suits and dresses rushed off with their briefcases in their hand and their phone in the other. I glanced around. I walked until I made it to a crosswalk. Once the light turned to let the pedestrians walk including me, a giant crowd of people pushed and shoved to insure they would get off the street in one piece. My phone started ringing. I had an alarm for 12:00 p.m. to find a place to eat lunch. I looked around for any cafes or restaurants. There was a place called Pasty's Pizzaria. I started walking again until I was stopped in my tracks. It was a large crowd huddled around something. I stepped closer through the crowd to see a man playing a saxophone. People started dancing and filling his case with spare change that they had. I smiled and dropped a dollar. When I made it for lunch, I ordered a small extra cheese and veggie pizza. When I got my pizza, I sat down at one of the dine-in tables. I opened the box, and the smell of fresh crust soothed my stomach. I ate a piece, and it tasted like heaven. The warm cheesy delight melted on my tongue, and the crunchiness from the vegetables and the flaky crust went hand and hand. When I was done, I went further into the city. I stopped at multiple boutiques. In New York, there was a very unique style. I walked into the Disney store and bought myself a Stitch and a Chewbacca plushie. When I left, the sun started to set, so I rushed back to the hotel I was staying at. When I got back, I stared out my window. All the lights made the city so welcoming. Then, I plopped down in bed, wanting to explore even more the next day.

Item 1
Read the excerpt from “The Red-Headed League.”

“I went round to the offices, but no one had ever heard of the Red-Headed League or Mr. Duncan Ross. I did not wish to lose such a place without a struggle, and so,” concluded Jabez Wilson, “as I had heard that you give advice to poor folk who need it, I came right away to you.”

“And you did very wisely,” said Holmes. “Your case is remarkable. I shall be happy to look into it. From what you have told me, I think graver problems hang from it than might at first sight appear. Tell me, what is he like, this assistant of yours who first called your attention to the advertisement, this Vincent Spaulding?”

“Small, stout-built, very quick in his ways, no hair on his face, around thirty years old. Has a white splash of acid on his forehead.”

Holmes sat up in his chair. “I thought as much,” said he. “Have you ever observed that his ears are pierced for earrings?”

“Yes, sir. He told me that a gypsy had done it for him when he was a lad.”

“Hum!” said Holmes, sinking back, deep in thought. “And he has cared well for your business while you were away?”

Question 1
Part A

Which conclusion can be drawn, based on the details in the excerpt?

Holmes is a part of the Red-Headed League.

Spaulding wants to help Mr. Wilson succeed.

The Red-Headed League is a fake business.

Holmes doubts Mr. Wilson is telling the truth.
Question 2
Part B

Which quotation from the text best supports the answer to Part A?

"'...as I had heard that you give advice to poor folk who need it, I came right away to you.’”

“’I went round to the offices, but no one had ever heard of the Red-Headed League or Mr. Duncan Ross.’”

“’And you did very wisely,’ said Holmes. ‘Your case is remarkable. I shall be happy to look into it.’”

“’Tell me, what is he like, this assistant of yours who first called your attention to the advertisement, this Vincent Spaulding?’”

There has been several times in my life that I have done something that I knew was right, even though others didn’t follow. One of these was when I was about eleven. There was a girl that was staying in my neighborhood for a while, who was very kind. Unfortunately, my friends in the area were not so nice to her. They basically bullied her, constantly mocking everything she said and making snarky comments about everything she did. One day, they went way too far with it. While she was on her bike, riding it peacefully down the street, minding her own business, they hit her with their bikes and pushed her into a thorn bush. She was home alone, and had no one to help her with her cuts. After the other girls left, I wandered over to her, and offered help. She gratefully accepted it, and thanked me for never bullying her like they did. I brought her to my back porch, carrying band-aids and a wet washcloth out of my house. I helped her clean her cuts, washing them out first. We are still good friends, and hang out almost every day. The other girls are regretful about what happened, and managed to apologize eventually. They’re not exactly friends, but don’t bully her anymore. That is one of quite a few times that I have done what I know is the right thing, even though others didn’t follow- in the beginning, at least.

Read the paragraph from the Newsela article "PRO/CON: Binge-Watching?" and note the boldface evidence to support the main argument.

"John Mayer is a psychologist. He says, "We are all bombarded with stress from everyday living, and with the nature of today's world where information floods us constantly. It is hard to shut our minds down and tune out the stress and pressures." Binge-watching acts "like a steel door," he says. It blocks our brains from thinking about those constant stressors that force themselves into our thoughts."

The main argument is that binge-watching helps to reduce stress.

Which answer best uses the evidence to evaluate the main argument?
