Aurora's Day
Aurora was going to turn 15 years old in a few months. This significant day would mark her coming of age in Mexican culture. She looked forward to the privileges of sitting with the adults at family gatherings. However, Aurora was disappointed to learn that she would not be given the traditional quinceañera, a celebration that would honor her transition from childhood to adulthood. Aurora was sad because she had dreamt of wearing a beautiful gown and being the center of attention at a fancy party.
"Mija, lo siento. My daughter, I am sorry. ¡Qué lástima! What a pity! We just can't afford such an expensive party," Aurora's mom said.
Aurora cried and pouted, but that didn't change the circumstances. Tía Claudia tried to lift Aurora's spirits by saying that she would still have fun attending her friends' quinceañeras, but that only made Aurora feel worse. Yet, Aurora tried her best to have a good attitude in the weeks leading up to her day. Aurora stopped complaining that she would not have a quinceañera and began to get excited about going to her friends' special parties.
On day of Aurora's was to have her party, her mom woke her early.
"Mija, I have a surprise for you," Aurora's mom said.
"What is it, Mama?" Aurora asked.
"You will have a quinceañera!" Aurora's mom said.
"But, how?" Aurora asked.
"Tu familia, your family, has worked together to make the celebration possible. Now get up! There is a lot to do!" Aurora's mom said.
Aurora was overwhelmed with joy. She quickly rose and helped her mom with the final preparations. At 4:00 p.m., Aurora's grandma, Abuelita Milagra, arrived at Aurora's home. She carried a large bag.
"You must get dressed, mi amor, my love!" Abuelita Milagra said.
Aurora took the bag from her grandma and ran to her bedroom. Inside the bag, she found an exquisite white satin dress, a pair of white slippers, and a special book. Abuelita Milagra made sure that Aurora had a traditional white gown to symbolize purity, instead of a brightly colored modern one. Aurora slipped on the dress and the shoes and ran to show her mom and grandma.
"Mija, you look like an angel!" Aurora's mom said.
Abuelita Milagra hugged and kissed Aurora. Then, she reached inside her purse and pulled out a necklace with a delicate gold heart. She placed the necklace around Aurora's neck.
"Otra cosa, another thing," Abuelita Milagra said.
Aurora's dad entered the kitchen carrying a sparkling rhinestone tiara.
"Mi princesa, my princess, I have a crown for you. You are my precious daughter. You have made your family proud by working hard at school, and by being truthful and kind," Aurora's dad said as he placed the tiara on her head.
Then, Aurora and her family drove to a family members house for a special meeting. Aurora received hugs and gifts from aunts and uncles. Next, she gave her younger cousin Sofía a doll. Aurora had received that same doll from her older cousin Pearla when Pearla had turned 15.
At last, it was time to celebrate. Aurora and her family went to a local restaurant where all of her friends and extended family were gathered. Dressed in a tuxedo, Aurora's friend Ramón served as her escort for the evening. He shyly complimented her appearance, took her arm, and walked her to the stage.
"¡Mil gracias, mi familia! A million thanks, my family! I will never forget this day!" Aurora said into the microphone.
"We love you, Aurora!" everyone shouted.

What language techniques does writer Mary Shelley use to develop the character of Frankenstein? specifically this extract.

Answers

The language techniques used by the author in the mentioned paragraph are as follows:

Foreshadowing that is mentioned throughout the prose, then alliteration in the sentence ‘with an anxiety that almost amounted to agony’ repetition of consonant ‘a’. it has allusions to Greek Mythology as well, the connection between Prometheus and Victor’s ability to create a life that was once just limited to God. Pathetic Fallacy is mentioned in the following line “the rain pattered dismally against the panes”. There is the use of Imagery as well when victor describes the body of the creature he created. ‘His jaws opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks’ this draws a parallel between the creature and a new-born child.

Foreshadowing is used when an author gives hints to what’s coming in the story further, Victor’s feelings as described gives the readers the hint that Victor regrets creating a life and will regret the entirety of the story. Alliteration is the repetition of words/sounds, consonant a is repeated throughout. Pathetic fallacy is used when an author gives inanimate objects feelings to denote the context of any story, rain [an inanimate object] cannot have gloomy feelings. Imagery is used to create a physical appearance in the head of the readers, Victor’s description of the creature creates imagery. Parallel just means a comparison drawn to two or more things that may not have a connection to each other.

Mary Shelley uses the aforementioned techniques and connects the readers with the story's main concern of evolutionary scientific techniques.

Explanation:

The reform and open-door policy of China began with the adoption of a new economic development strategy at the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCPCC) in late 1978. Under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, who had returned to the political arena after his three previous defeats, the Chinese government began to pursue an open-door policy, in which it adopted a stance to achieve economic growth through the active introduction of foreign capital and technology while maintaining its commitment to socialism.

The obvious aim of this policy shift was to rebuild its economy and society that were devastated by the Cultural Revolution. The policy shift also appears to have been prompted by recognition that the incomes of ordinary Chinese were so low, in comparison with incomes in other Asian economies, that the future of the Chinese state and the communist regime would be in jeopardy unless something was done to raise living standards of its people through economic growth.

The government subsequently established a number of areas for foreign investment, including the special economic zones, open coastal cities, the economic and technology development zones, the delta open zones, the peninsula open zones, the open border citiees, and the high-tech industry development zones. The establishment of these zones provided the trigger for massive inflows of foreign investment, primarily from companies in Hong Kong and Taiwan. At the same time, China promoted its socialist market economy concept. The changes brought an entrepreneurial boom that resulted in the emergence of huge numbers of entrepreneurs and venture businesses within China.

C.

Queen Victoria came forward to greet the Maharini; kissing her not once, but twice.

D.

The Maharini felt nervous about going to a strange land; she felt certain that she would be stared at.

Answers

Hello!

Answer:

D. The Maharini felt nervous about going to a strange land; she felt certain that she would be stared at.

Explanation:

The purpose of a semicolon is to connect two independent clauses that are closely-related by narrowing the gap between the sentences (e.g. by replacing a period or without using a conjunction such as and).

For example, in this sentence, the semicolon replace the conjunction "because".

The sentence could also be written as: The Maharini felt nervous about going to a strange land because she felt certain that she would be stared at.

To double check if you are using a semicolon correctly, you can always try to substitute a conjunction in as shown in the above example to figure out if it makes sense or not.

The sentence which correctly demonstrates the correct use of a semicolon is the Maharini felt nervous about going to a strange land; she felt certain that she would be stared at. Therefore, the correct option is D.

Two related independent clauses that are closely related in meaning but can stand alone as separate sentences are properly joined by a semicolon. This reduces the need for collation while improving the flow and coherence of the text.

This grammatical choice evokes the Queen's conflicting feelings of nervousness and confidence as she prepares to travel to an exotic location. The semicolon serves as a punctuation mark of balance, providing a thoughtful pause between phrases so that the reader can appreciate the different feelings and also understand how they are related.

Therefore, the correct option is D.

Stop cradling it and pass!"Danny was the team captain of the lacrosse team. He was one of the best players in the league. He was good, but he could be malicious. That morning, my playing technique was taking the brunt of Danny's harsh criticism."You really need to learn to pass better, Finn. you're letting the team down!"Practice ended, and as Danny strode swiftly back toward the changing rooms, I hung my head and looked down at the green grass of the field. At the start of practice, the lush, green grass had made me smile. I relished being outside and playing lacrosse with my teammates. Sure, many of them were better than me, but I enjoyed the game and being part of a team. I was always the one cheering the loudest for my friends when they threw the ball across the goal line. I wished Danny would cheer for us instead of shouting callous things. It was starting to ruin the game so much for me that I was thinking of quitting.Just then, there was another loud shout from across the field. This time, however, it was a shout of agony. I looked up and saw Danny. He was lying on the concrete ground in front of the change rooms, clutching his scraped knee. Without thinking twice, I ran to Danny's side to help."Are you okay?" I asked, bending down to comfort him. "Here, use my jersey to help clean your knee."Danny looked up at me in surprise. He wasn't used to people being kind to him. Danny took the shirt as our coach arrived to help. The coach lifted Danny off the ground, steadied him on his feet, and helped him hobble into the change rooms. As I followed the others into the building, I realized that Danny hadn't even said thank you.The next morning at practice, Danny was still in pain. He was limping and kept complaining of fatigue. The coach had suggested that Danny sit out of the practice games, which was making him meaner than ever. The other boys were trying to keep their distance from Danny, but I had an idea. My dad had taught me to be kind no matter what. He said kindness wasn't always in style but assured me that it was one of the most important things in life.I walked over to Danny and the coach and said, "Coach? Maybe Danny can play goalie today. That way, he doesn't have to run, but he can still play with us. He's one of our strongest defenders, so I bet he'd make a great goalie!"Surprise spread across Danny's face, followed quickly by a big smile."That's a great idea!" Danny exclaimed, looking at me with appreciation. "Please let me play, coach!"The coach agreed, and Danny pushed himself off the bench gingerly. He shuffled over to me and extended his hand."Thanks so much, Finn," Danny said.It was my turn to be surprised."You're a great teammate," Danny said. "I really need to try to be more like you. I just really want our team to be the best!""Me, too," I said. "If we look out for one other, I think we can be!"Select the evidence from the story that indicates a change of setting.A. At the start of practice, the lush, green grass had made me smile.B. He was lying on the concrete ground in front of the change rooms.C. I relished being outside and playing lacrosse with my teammates.D. Without thinking twice, I ran to Danny's side to help. What political insights can be drawn from the borders of your home country?
