Whilst investigating the death of a local assassin, a brave student called Kurisu uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, golden kunai circulating throughout New York. As soon as anyone uses the kunai, he or she has exactly 8 weeks left to live.

The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look distorted. A marked person feels like a burning fire to touch.

Kurisu gets hold of the kunai, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into his mind: a bloody mask balancing on a assassin's face, an old newspaper headline about a gang accident, a hooded man ranting about bodys and a drinking well located in a hidden location in the woods.

When Kurisu notices his arms have fire-like properties, he realizes that the curse of the golden kunai is true and calls in his friend, a nurse called Alex, to help.

Alex examines the kunai and willingly submits herself to the curse. She finds that the same visions flash before her eyes. She finds the bloody mask balancing on an assassin's face particularly chilling. She joins the queue for a supernatural death.

Kurisu and Alex pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded man.

A few years later, Kurisu walked over to the window and reflected on his dark surroundings.

He had survived the curse and was now living in the forest next to the well. He had figured his friend Alex burned up in flames as he didn’t see her make it to drink from the well in time.

Then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Alex. Kurisu gulped. He was not prepared for Alex.

As Kurisu stepped outside and Alex came closer, he could see the easy glint in her eye.

"I am here because I want you dead," Alex bellowed, in a giving tone. “You left me to die out there” she showed him a burn across her arms. “This is what that curse did to me” She slammed her fist against Kurisu's chest, with the force of 10 bulls. "But it made me stronger, Kurisu."

Kurisu looked back, even more shocked and still holding the gold kunai. "Alex, I don't want to hurt you," he replied.

They looked at each other with mixed feelings. While classical music played in the background, two angry and confused people were standing in the rain.

Kurisu regarded Alex's skinny limbs and burnt body. He held out his hand. "Let's not fight," he whispered, gently.

"Hmph," pondered Alex.

"Please?" begged Kurisu “I never meant to hurt you”. He showed her that he had a scar across his face from the golden blade.

Alex looked concerned, her body glistening in the morning rain like a bloody knife.

Then Kurisu led Alex inside for a nice glass of lemonade.

THE END

Answer:

In "Rip Van Winkle,” Washington Irving gives an extensive description of the mountains. As consistent with themes of nature in romantic literature, the mountains are described with a tone of admiration:

“From an opening...he could overlook all the lower country for many a mile of rich woodland.  He saw at a distance the lordly Hudson, far, far below him, moving on its silent but majestic course, with the reflection of a purple cloud, or the sail of a lagging bark here and there sleeping on its glassy bosom, and at last losing itself in the blue highlands.”

Another theme consistent with the romantic era is the emphasis on imagination and the supernatural. Rip realizes that he has been asleep for 20 years:

“With some difficulty he got down into the glen: he found the gully up which he and his companion had ascended the preceding evening; but to his astonishment a mountain stream was now foaming down it, leaping from rock to rock, and filling the glen with babbling murmurs.”

“As he approached the village, he met a number of people, but none whom he new, which somewhat surprised him, for he had thought himself acquainted with every one in the country round. Their dress, too, was of a different fashion from that to which he was accustomed.”

The romantics were fascinated by the supernatural and by nature. He draws connections between the mountains and the Rip’s story of falling asleep for 20 years.
