Read the paragraph. Then answer the question that follows.
Perhaps you wanted pizza for dinner, but were out voted by the rest of the family who wanted chill. This is similar to what happens in a community. One person has to give up a right for the good
of the group. Sometimes citizens' duties and rights conflict with each other. A good example is a public protest. People have the right meet in groups and share ideas. However, a protest can
disrupt traffic or other normal activities. A city must provide extra police protection to keep people safe. Therefore, the city has the right to require permission in advance for a protest.
Government must make laws to balance the rights of individuals and different groups of people.

Item 4 In the story "Charles," how does Shirley Jackson develop the negative viewpoint that Laurie's parents have of Charles's mother? Select the two correct answers. At the P.T.A meeting, Laurie's mother notes that none of the mothers look "haggard enough" to be Charles's mother. Laurie's parents discuss with each other what Charles's mother should do to get him to behave. Laurie's mother hopes to befriend Charles's mother because she sees the same problems with Laurie. Charles's father says, "I don't see how they could hold a PTA meeting without Charles's mother."

Answers

Answer:

At the P.T.A meeting, Laurie's mother notes that none of the mothers look "haggard enough" to be Charles's mother.

Laurie's mother hopes to befriend Charles's mother because she sees the same problems with Laurie.

Explanation:

Shirley Jackson's short story "Charles" revolves around a young, rebellious boy named Laurie and how he made up his classmate Charles as a way to express his frustration and instability in his new environment. The story focuses on Laurie's attempts to try to alienate himself from the bad boy Charles and the good boy he was, though we found out in the end that it was indeed him all along.

The two instances when Laurie's parents seem to have negative preconceived notions about the behavior of Charles and his influence over their son can be seen in Laurie's mother's attempts to locate and befriend Charles's mother. She wanted to know how she deals with her troublesome kid while also commenting that she was unable to find any mother who looks "haggard enough" to be Charles's mother.

Thus, the correct answers are the first and third options.

Answers

I believe this is correct. In the sentence: “I always find friends in unusual places, for example, my friend and I met while teaching an aerobics class to senior citizens.”

I would say that the sentence is correct the way it it because the phrase “for example” is not necessary, thus it is offset by commas.

Others ways I would write the sentence:

I always find friends in unusual places. For example, my friend and i met while teaching an aerobics class to senior citizens.

Rosen’s article is about Virtual Friendship and the New Narcissism. She compares social media relationships to actual face-to-face relations to show that people are increasingly going for the former. Online interactions have grown over time. According to the article, networking is on the increase especially virtually. She believes that online interactions are on the increase because people want to avoid the risk of disapproval, of heartache, of being thought a fool during face to face relations. At the end, Rosen thinks that is better to spend more time improving ourselves for better physical relations than revamping our images online for better "connections".

There's food and drink and-' There are many references at the beginning of the novel where it is said to be the next treasure island, made of total perfection. The book can be compared to the garden of Eden at the start because they think it is a wonderful place, just like paradise. Golding uses mythic references to keep us thinking throughout the novel. The novel then delves into the idea of this being ironic because as we see it is not perfect at all. Looking at the first paragraph we can see many changes the island has already undergone and how the novel suggests, subtly, how the crisis has started.

THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

How does the author convince readers that the match was "the most wonderful thing in the world"? Please respond in three to five complete sentences, using evidence from the text to support your answer. (5 points)

Answers

Answer:

The author develops the idea that relying on nature was problematic, by stating in the  second paragraph, " The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble." This is saying that when you make a fire from nature, problems could occur like if you have a fire going, a sudden gust of wind or rain could put the fire out and you have no way of making another fire if the weather starts getting bad. So, this is saying that relying on nature is problematic, because once you start a fire, you can't control what happens to it.

Match each action with the unfair business practice it represents. Production limitation price fixing bid rigging ? A defense contractor gets its competitors to agree not to enter bids. ? A cartel of sugar growers agrees to reduce the amount of sugar it brings to market. ? A group of oil companies agrees to charge $3 for a gallon of gas.

Answers

Answer:

Bid rigging - A defense contractor gets its competitors to agree not to enter bids. Production Limitation -  A cartel of sugar growers agrees to reduce the amount of sugar it brings to market. Price fixing - A group of oil companies agrees to charge $3 for a gallon of gas.

Explanation:

Bid rigging is a fraudulent practice that establishes an illegal auction scheme, carried out by corrupt employees linked to companies that can span several different countries. This process results in a set of non-competitive bids, to encourage the existence of higher bids from participants. An example of this can be seen when a defense contractor causes its competitors to agree not to enter bids.

Production Limitation is also a commercial practice that promotes injustices and occurs when a company establishes that it will limit the quantity of its products on the market, just to create a dishonest increase in demand. An example of this occurs when a cartel of sugar producers agrees to reduce the amount of sugar it places on the market.

Price fixing occurs when a group of companies in the same industry decide to sell their products at a fixed price in order to be able to manipulate supply and demand as they see fit. An example of this occurs when a group of oil companies agrees to charge $ 3 for a gallon of gas.
