A Blue-Ridged Adventure

"Hey Garry! Give me a hand," Mark shouted from the top of a rocky embankment.
"Just a moment," said Garry, as he made an attempt to strengthen his footing on the rocks near the cavern.
Together, Garry and Mark descended into the famous underground caverns of Shenandoah. As they entered the cavern, both boys had no regrets about signing up for this trekking trip in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.
"I don't think we need a flashlight," Mark said, looking at the natural crystalline cave formations that seemed to be emitting a light of their own.
Behind a large, craggy rock formation, the boys saw a small opening about the size of a doorway, and began to move towards it. Quietly, they stepped in through the entryway.
"Let's see where this takes us," whispered Garry boldly as he took the first step down a long, narrow path.
As they moved further down the walkway, the light became dimmer, and eventually they could not see anything around them.
After what seemed like an eternity of dragging their fingers along the walls of the cavern to follow the path in the dark, a glimmer of light appeared. Silently, the boys hurried their steps until they found themselves in a brightly lit open expanse, about the size of a large concert hall.
The cavern here was unlike the other caverns because the sun poured in through an opening in the ceiling.
The boys were amazed to see concentric, ancient stone circles piled on the floor of the cave.
"We may have stumbled upon an ancient Paleo-American Indian site," said Mark, who had just written an article on the ancient people. When he grew up, he planned to become an archaeologist. "This site must be at least 9,000 years old," he said. Though he wanted to stay and explore, he knew it was illegal to tamper with archaeological sites. So, he turned to Garry and said, "We should get out of here without disturbing anything."
Guess I'll come back here one day when I write my book on the Paleo-American Indians, Mark thought.
As they walked back down the pathway that led to the room, Garry exclaimed "Can you believe what we just saw? That was so great! You'll have to come rediscover this place when you're a famous archaeologist and author!"
Stepping out of the cavern, they took in the pristine, lush scenery all around them. They had a panoramic view of the mountains from where they stood.
"Think we should try to head back?" Garry asked.
When they climbed back toward the hiking trail, they discovered that Sarah and Abe, a couple of their fellow trekkers, were waiting for them. They walked along the riverside and turned the corner to close in on the campsite. As they did, they spotted Sue and Ben, two other trekkers on the expedition. The team had planned a delicious campfire meal for the night.
"Where were you both?" asked Sarah.
"We were getting a little worried about you," said Abe.
"Garry and I were just walking around. We saw some neat crystals," Mark said. "Right, Garry?"
Garry smiled and nodded, "Right."
As the sun set over crystal clear waters of the river, both boys thought about their adventure. It was nice to have a secret, especially one that they could rediscover some other time.

I was up at dawn and found everybody up and awaiting eagerly the moment when there would be sufficient light in the canyon to make the climbing of the Big Tree and the entrance into Crooked Arm Gulch safe. At last Mr. Conroyal declared that the great moment had come.
"But," and he glanced around the group of eager faces, "we need one man here to stand guard. Who is willing to stay behind?"
For a moment, no one appeared willing to make this sacrifice. Then, with a smile on his face, Frank Holt offered.
"Reckon I'll stay," he said. "I'm not as young as I once was, and crawling along that rock is dangerous to legs as old as mine."
We set off to climb Big Tree. You may be sure that there were no laggards among us.
When we reached the gulch, Ham said, "Now, the first thing to do is to get down to the bottom."
"That looks easy! Right this way!" Thune began excitedly clambering down the rocks.
Soon, we all stood at the bottom of Crooked Arm Gulch. We excitedly looked around for the entrance to the Cave of Gold, looking in vain. In front of us the wall of the gulch had been hollowed out into a great overhanging arch, seventy-five or more feet in height and some fifteen feet deep.

In a minute more, we all were searching for the hidden entrance to the cave on the back wall of the arch.
Thune stopped in front of a large flat rock that had fallen so that it stood nearly on edge, leaning against the back wall of the arch. "Come, give me a hand, Bud," he said to me, "and let's see what is behind this rock."
In a moment, we were tugging at the huge slab of rock and, at last, with a mighty effort, we pulled it away from the wall, revealing a black opening in the solid rock.
"Bravo!" I yelled.
"Found!" shouted Thune, and both of us made a dive for the hole, but Ham stopped us.
Ham thrust his body into the opening and began cautiously working his way forward.
In about five minutes, Ham came backing hurriedly out.
"Who's got the candles?" he cried excitedly. "There's a cave, but we must have lights."
Ham caught up one of the candles and, quickly lighting it, crawled into the hole again, holding the candle out in front of him.
Thune followed.
"The rest of us had better wait outside until we hear from Ham," Mr. Conroyal said, staring anxiously into the hole.
For perhaps ten minutes we waited, although to the uneasy and excited watchers outside it seemed more like an hour, because not a sound came from the hole. Then, suddenly, the excited voice of Thune was heard, booming out through the hole.
"It's the cave, the Cave of Gold!" he cried exultantly, his voice trembling with excitement. "Come in, all of you. There is room for all. I will hold my candle so that you can see."
In five minutes, we were staring wonderingly around us. The bottom of the cave was level and composed of a very coarse gravel, mixed with little rounded chunks of a yellowish metal that glowed in the light of the candles like thousands of dull yellow coals of fire.
Ham knelt down. In a voice hardly above a whisper, he said, "It is gold!"
At long last, we had found the old miner's lost cave of gold.

The Two Friends
Once upon a time, in a jungle, there lived two very unusual friends—a tiger and a lion. They had been together since they were cubs and did not think it strange that they were friends. In that same jungle, there also lived an old monk. Many animals would come to the monk for guidance and all of them would go back satisfied with his wise advice.

One evening, the lion and tiger were strolling through the forest when the tiger saw the moon in the sky. The previous night had been a full moon night. The tiger noticed that the moon had decreased in size from the previous night. He turned to the lion and said, "Looks like we're in for some cold weather, the moon is smaller tonight." The lion looked up at the waning moon and replied, "Who told you that a waning moon indicates cold weather? A waxing moon indicates that we are in for cold days ahead." The tiger laughed at the lion and told him that he had gotten his facts wrong. The lion retorted that the tiger was ignorant. He told the tiger that he should check his facts before getting into an argument. Thus, the tiger and the lion continued to argue, both of them sure that the other was wrong.

The argument between the tiger and the lion would have continued, but then they decided to consult the monk. When the monk heard what they were arguing about, he laughed at their folly. He told them that cold weather did not depend on the waxing or waning of the moon but on the direction from which the wind was blowing. On hearing this, the tiger and the lion were satisfied that they both were wrong.

The Party
It was Ryan's fiftieth birthday the coming month and Ryan's wife, Paula, was helping him plan a grand birthday party. Paula had invited Ryan's parents, brother, two sisters, school friends, and colleagues. She had even managed to track down some of Ryan's old childhood friends. She decided to have a theme-based party. Ryan loved doing crosswords and Paula decided that nothing could be better than having a crossword-themed birthday party.

She spoke to Ryan's friends and they all loved the idea. The highlight of the party would be the cake. Paula got in touch with a famous cake artist and requested the artist and his team to make a crossword-themed cake. Paula and Ryan's friends came up with a crossword made up of clues about Ryan's favorite authors and singers, movies, and memorable events in his life including Ryan and Paula's first date, their first holiday together, their kids' graduations, and other little details about Ryan's life. Finally, the much-awaited day arrived and Paula was excited to see how Ryan would react on seeing the cake.

When Ryan saw the cake, he was speechless. He was extremely touched that Paula had taken so much time to think of something so unique and special for him. Paula asked him to solve the crossword imprinted on his cake before cutting it. As he read the clues and thought of the answers, Ryan couldn't help but feel nostalgic as all the fond memories and experiences associated with the clues came back to him. Everyone had a great time and the day created many new memories for Paula and Ryan.
