Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World.

On a plantation there were large groups of workers—between fifty and several hundred. The mill was right next to the crop, so that growing and grinding took place in the same spot. And all the work was governed by extremely tight, rigid discipline. The Muslims began to put together the rules for this new kind of farming. Both they and the Christians experimented with using their slaves to run the plantations. At first many of the slaves working sugar plantations in the Mediterranean were Russians, or anyone captured in war. But even all this careful organization did not solve the second problem with sugar.

What evidence from the passage best supports the inference that making sugar was difficult? Select two options.

"growing and grinding took place in the same spot"
"the work was governed by extremely tight, rigid discipline"
"Muslims began to put together the rules for this new kind of farming"
"experimented with using their slaves to run the plantations"
“many of the slaves working sugar plantations in the Mediterranean were Russians”
"careful organization did not solve the second problem with sugar"

Hall knew that the US was close to getting involved in the war, but he waited until "February 24, when Hall sensed that the Zimmermann telegram would tip the balance in favor of the U.S. joining the Allied forces." Read the last stanza of Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken." Why is it significant that the two roads diverged?

Answers

Last Stanza of Robert Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken."

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Answer:

The speaker is recalling, "with a sigh," how difficult it had been for him to choose the more traveled or the less traveled of the two roads. The forked road is a metaphor for the inherent duality in the natural world.

Further explanation:

The author uses a metaphor to discuss life in this poem. He compares life to a trip through the forest, where each person must choose their own way. The difficulties of the decision is discussed by the author. He also understands that the way his life has turned out is a result of the route he has chosen. The two routes show the range of decisions people may make in life and how these choices affect how their lives turn out.

What is the meaning of the final stanza in "The Road Not Taken"?

The prevalent interpretation of Robert Frost's "The Road Not Takenlast "'s verse is that it considers the possibilities for knowledge and experience that may result from taking the chance of forging ahead into the unknown, making the first option the best choice of interpretation. Robert Frost adopts a melancholy tone for the poem "The Road Not Takenlast "'s line. Years from now, he sees himself sighing and reflecting on the outcomes of his decision to choose one path over another. He claims that taking the "rarely traveled by" and "least recognized" path has made all the difference in his life. Let's consider what this could imply. Frost isn't just groaning about a backroad. Even if such roads are lovely and pleasant, the poem's ultimate message goes far deeper. The adage that one can never know what could be waiting for them on an unfamiliar path has some validity. That is what the entire poem says. The speaker must make a decision, but he has no idea what is on either the bad or the good route. He is unable to see in either way around the bend. He has to make the best decision he can, so he opts for the somewhat less travelled path. The last stanza's possible significance can be found in this. The speaker in this reading takes a chance. He extends himself in a way that is less common. He makes the decision to stand out, and he believes that doing so will have a profound impact on his life. He'll find out more. He will have singular experiences that he otherwise would not have experienced. We may unknowingly create possibilities for ourselves when we take a chance on the uncharted territory.

Read the Greek myth "Midas" retold by Thomas Bulfinch and answer the question.

[1] Bacchus, on a certain occasion, found his old schoolmaster and foster-father, Silenus, missing. The old man had been drinking, and in that state wandered away, and was found by some peasants, who carried him to their king, Midas. Midas recognized him, and treated him hospitably, entertaining him for ten days and nights with an unceasing round of jollity.

[2] On the eleventh day he brought Silenus back, and restored him in safety to his pupil. Whereupon Bacchus offered Midas his choice of a reward, whatever he might wish. He asked that whatever he might touch should be changed into gold. Bacchus consented, though sorry that he had not made a better choice.

[3] Midas went his way, rejoicing in his new-acquired power, which he hastened to put to the test. He could scarce believe his eyes when he found a twig of an oak, which he plucked from the branch, become gold in his hand. He took up a stone; it changed to gold. He touched a sod; it did the same. He took up an apple from the tree; you would have thought he had robbed the garden of the Hesperides. His joy knew no bounds, and as soon as he got home, he ordered the servants to set a splendid repast on the table. Then he found to his dismay that whether he touched bread, it hardened in his hand; or put a morsel to his lip, it defied his teeth. He took a glass of wine, but it flowed down his throat like melted gold.

[4] In consternation at the unprecedented affliction, he strove to divest himself of his power; he hated the gift he had lately coveted. But all in vain; starvation seemed to await him. He raised his arms, all shining with gold, in prayer to Bacchus, begging to be delivered from his glittering destruction. Bacchus, merciful deity, heard and consented. "Go," said he, "to River Pactolus, trace its fountain-head, there plunge yourself and body in, and wash away your fault and its punishment." He did so, and scarce had he touched the waters before the gold-creating power passed into them, and the river sands became changed into gold, as they remain to this day.

Select a possible theme of the myth.

A. Gold is a symbol of wealth and authority.
B. Greed can result in negative consequences.
C. People who expect a reward for good deeds are selfish.
D. Money does not bring as much happiness as friendship.

Answers

Answer:

B. Greed can result in negative consequences.

Explanation:

The main question theme that is very heavily touched upon in Midas is Greed. Essentially the whole question in this story would be; is greed good or bad? Is it both or neither?

The way it is talked about in the story does put a pretty clear conflict in place, but at that same time has a confusing resolution. Whether that was Ovid's (in his version of the story) intention isn't all that much clear either. Throughout the story a picture is painted in which Midas seems like a decent guy. He takes Silenus in, and helps help get back on his feet, which Bacchus rewards him for. So Midas, in return for helping Silenus wishes for anything he touches to turn into gold. In differing versions of the story Midas has very different reasons as to why he wishes for what he did, but in my opinion, it doesn't really matter considering all he has to do is pray to Bacchus and bathe in a river. All in all the whole theme does get pretty confusing, because even though Midas' greed causes him a good deal of trouble, he also pretty easily gets out the said situation. Take what you will from the story, but I would heavily recommend reading Homer's The Odyssey, and The Iliad, as they are again, in my opinion, literary masterpieces.

Hope this helps! Please feel free to message me if anything is incorrect! :)
