In poetics, aristotle claims that a great tragedy includes a character whose change in fortune "be not from bad to good, but, reversely, from good to bad. " how do the changes in macbeth’s behavior in acts i-iii illustrate this idea? cite evidence from throughout acts i-iii to support your answer

Answers

Answer 1

Acts I–III serve as an illustration of Macbeth's transformation from good to bad as he gives in to the lure of ambition and power. Initially, the King, Duncan, and his other Thanes esteem Macbeth for being a brave and honorable warrior.

However, the witches' prophecy and his wife's support inflame Macbeth's ambition, inspiring him to plan Duncan's murder. This may be observed in Act I, Scene 7, when Macbeth is enticed to commit the murder by his ambition and his wife: "I am settled, and bend up/Each corporal agent to this terrible feat." (1.7.67-68).

His choice to assassinate the King and ascend to the throne signals the beginning of his transformation from a brave warrior to a despot. Additionally, Macbeth's conscience starts to trouble him as he battles guilt and regret. His conscience appears to him in a vision of a bloody dagger and asks him, "Is this a dagger which I see before me,/The handle towards my hand?" He is unable to fall asleep. (2.1.33-34).

As he resorts to desperate measures to prove his innocence, this further exemplifies the moral decline of his character. Finally, Macbeth's ambition makes him more and more paranoid, and he sends killers after anybody who challenges his authority.

Macbeth commands the murder of Macduff and his family in Act III, Scene 4: "Let every man be master of his time/Till seven at night." (3.4.111-112). Macbeth's demise and sad conclusion are ultimately caused by this slide into dictatorship. Therefore, Aristotle's concept of a character whose fortune changes from good to bad is illustrated through Macbeth's deeds in Acts I–III.

It was a long and almost unbearable drive out into the desert as the hot sun beat down on Detective Nose’s face. As luck would have it, his air conditioning had broken down only two days earlier and despite having all the windows open, the heat was simply excruciating. As the inspector sipped on some of the water that he brought for the trip, the thought that he may have somehow missed his destination was beginning to penetrate his mind. Just as he was about to turn around and head back, a small sign appeared that read “Ross Expeditions Here”. With a silent sigh of relief, he turned his car towards the small cabin that could be seen in the distance.
As Nose reached the front door, Jason Ross introduced himself and motioned for the detective to come inside. The interior of the cabin consisted of one very large, but cozy room. In the right-hand corner, all the camping supplies were piled including an axe, one five-liter jug of water, some canned food, a lantern and other various pieces of camping equipment. To the back of the room was a small fireplace, and a wooden table with a couple mismatched chairs.
The most notable item in the cabin could be seen in the middle of the floor; a body, evidently lifeless, sprawled on top of two sleeping bags that were casually laid there. The cause of death was not obvious.
“Can you tell me what happened?” said Detective Nose.
“I wish I knew,” Jason said quietly. “I run a desert camping expedition business, providing tours to a variety of people. I have been trying for years to get my brother to come and join me, but being the city person that he was, he would always scoff at the idea. He used to joke that if he wanted to be without the convenience of phones, running water, or electricity, he’d simply skip paying his bills. Anyways, last week we were having a few drinks together, and we made a silly bet in which if he lost, he would have to spend a week out here with me. As you can see, he lost.”
Jason then paused for moment and took a long deep breath before continuing.
“I woke up early this morning and since my brother was still sleeping, I decided to do a little dirt biking. I was gone for about two hours. When I returned, I found my brother dead in the middle of the floor. I really do not know what happened. Other than his wallet that was on the table, nothing seems to be missing.”
“I think you may know more than you’re telling me!”

This statement suggests that the person is more focused on their personal workload and less concerned about the efficiency and productivity of the group as a whole. Individuals in a group often prioritize their own work over the group's goals, which can hinder collaboration and result in a lack of cohesion among group members. This approach may lead to delays, miscommunication, and a lack of accountability. Hence, the right option is (d).

In contrast, members who adopt a task role focus on the group's objectives, timelines, and milestones. They are willing to contribute to the team's success by sharing ideas, offering constructive criticism, and ensuring that everyone is on the same page. Therefore, to ensure the success of the group, it's important to encourage members to adopt a task role and prioritize the group's objectives over their individual tasks.

You are a line manager in a medium-size marketing organisation that creates innovative visuals for companies. You have to pitch your idea to a new large corporate company that may bring in a lot of business in the near future. There is unfortunately certain information that you need for your pitch tomorrow on your colleague’s computer. Your colleague is currently away on holiday for another week still. The two of you work closely together and she has given you her login details before. As this deal is important and it can lead to a possible promotion for both of you, you decide to log into her computer. When you log in, you get a few notifications on new e-mail messages. One of the e-mails is from the CEO of one of your biggest competitors thanking your colleague for the data, which you know she was not allowed to share. You quickly close the mail, mark it as unread, get the information you need on the computer and log out. Afterwards you feel guilty that you have breached a level of trust. The information you were after will help you win your contract although you wonder what to do with the information you have just gained. Should you confront her when she is back? Should you let Human Resources know, leading to possible disciplinary action? If so, you will have to declare how you came about the information, which can in turn get you into trouble. What would you do?

Answers

As a line manager in this situation, I would feel conflicted about the course of action to take. On one hand, I understand the importance of securing this potential business deal, but on the other hand, breaching someone's trust is not something to take lightly.

My initial step would be to reflect on the situation and try to understand why my colleague shared the data with our competitor. Maybe there was a misunderstanding or miscommunication, or perhaps my colleague was under pressure to meet a tight deadline. I would take these factors into consideration before making any decisions. If I were to confront my colleague, I would do it in a respectful and non-accusatory manner, seeking to understand her reasons for sharing the data.

Depending on her response, I may consider discussing the matter with Human Resources, but only after weighing the potential consequences. In the end, I would prioritize the company's values of integrity and transparency and aim to resolve the issue in a way that is fair and just. While it may be tempting to take shortcuts to secure a deal, doing so can have severe consequences for both myself and the company in the long run.
