"Where I Come From
By Jennifer Robles"

I come from a long line of
Confusion,
A long line of
Patience
And understanding myself
When there is no one who understands.
I come from
A long line
That never ends
But bends
To the right
And then to the left.
I come from a long line of
Liars
And fakers,
A line of cutters
Who step in front of me
In line
In a long line
Where I come from.

Answer 1

Explanation:

In this poem, Robles depicts where "she comes from." She uses the repetition of a certain line: "I come from a long line," to bring together the different parts of her poem. A repetition of a line or group of lines throughout a poem is known as a refrain. Robles starts by saying,

"I come from a long line of

Confusion,

A long line of

Patience

And understanding myself."

These lines represent the component of Robles' origin where she is understanding herself and who she is. The confusion, is her being unsure of who she wants to be. The patience and understanding, is her taking time to grasp her ideals and beliefs, and understanding who she wants to be.

The next part of the poem:

When there is no one who understands.

I come from

A long line

That never ends

But bends

To the right

And then to the left.

This portion discusses her struggle with others being inconsiderate and non-accepting with who she is. When no one understands, she has to take paths to avoid these resentful individuals while still searching to fully uncover her true identity.

The last part of the poem:

I come from a long line of

Liars

And fakers,

A line of cutters

Who step in front of me

In line

This section describes the people who pretend to be understanding, friendly, and kind. The "Liars," and "fakers," are those who put on an act of amiability in order to benefit from or gain the trust of the author. The line cutters, refer to to individuals in Robles' life, who take advantage of her to get ahead. That's why she describes them as "A line of cutters, Who step in forn of me, In line." Then, Robles ends the poem with the same refrain, just altered to fit into context.

In a long line

Where I come from.

Hope this helped! :)

Read the excerpt from "Politics and the English Language" by George Orwell.

In our time, political speech and writing are largely the defense of the indefensible. Things like the continuance of British rule in India, the Russian purges and deportations, the dropping of the atom bombs on Japan, can indeed be defended, but only by arguments which are too brutal for most people to face, and which do not square with the professed aims of political parties. Thus political language has to consist largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness. . . . Such phraseology is needed if one wants to name things without calling up mental pictures of them. Consider for instance some comfortable English professor defending Russian totalitarianism. He cannot say outright, "I believe in killing off your opponents when you can get good results by doing so.” Probably, therefore, he will say something like this:

While freely conceding that the Soviet regime exhibits certain features which the humanitarian may be inclined to deplore, we must, I think, agree that a certain curtailment of the right to political opposition is an unavoidable concomitant of transitional periods, and that the rigors which the Russian people have been called upon to undergo have been amply justified in the sphere of concrete achievement.

Which statement correctly identifies the way evidence is used to support the underlined claim?

Orwell lists statistics to support the underlined claim.
Orwell quotes an article with examples of cloudy language.
Orwell provides a hypothetical situation with someone using unclear language.
Orwell lists facts to prove that most newspapers use puzzling language.

Answers

To support the claim Orwell provides a hypothetical situation with someone using unclear language, as shown in the second answer option.

What is a hypothetical situation? An invented situation.A situation that does not exist in real life.

Orwell wanted to show how people defend questionable behavior with difficult language, without objectivity, and with little clarity. This ends up confusing citizens and leading them to defend situations they cannot understand.

Dear District Chief Executive Officer,

RE: LETTER DRAWING YOUR ATTENTION TO TWO MAJOR ISSUES AFFECTING DEVELOPMENT IN MY COMMUNITY

I write to express my concern about two major issues that are negatively affecting development in my community.

The first issue is the lack of basic infrastructure. There are no good roads, no streetlights and no reliable water supply. This makes it very difficult for businesses to operate and for people to live normal lives.

The second issue is the high level of crime. There have been several reports of robberies, assaults and even murders. This has made the community very unsafe and has led to many people moving away.

These two issues are having a very negative impact on development in my community. I urge you to take action to address them as a matter of urgency.

Robots on Earth
by Jerry West

Explosions. Car chases. A man and woman, drenched in sweat, limping from a building as it crumbles to the ground, muster the last of their strength to rescue humanity from its inevitable extinction at the cold, metal hands of humanoid creatures with artificial intelligence gone awry. For decades, books and movies have dictated how we think of robots. Simply the word "robot" can bring to mind images of evil, mechanical creatures bent on taking over the world and wiping out every glimmer of humanity. And yet, the truth of machines is dramatically different. Today's robots hold little in common with their villainous cousins from action-packed science fiction. Most robots have no interest in harming the human population at all; they exist to aid people in making life safer, healthier, and more productive.

For example, jobs such as welding and painting are important to civilization as we know it, but experience has taught us that these activities can be hazardous to human health. In addition, fumes in automobile and airplane factories can harm organic bodies that become exposed to their toxins in the assembly process. Even when the best precautions are taken, workers may still suffer from lack of adequate ventilation. What is the answer to these difficult dilemmas? Robots. Because machines don't rely on clean air or comfortable temperatures, because they can function even in the midst of deadly gasses, they can take over with ease where humans would suffer greatly. Working together, humans and robots can get the job done.

A robot's job isn't limited to the terrestrial level, either. Even in space, machines such as the R2 humanoid robot at the International Space Station complete dangerous tasks for astronauts, protecting them from potentially deadly situations. And then, when there are mundane but essential tasks to conduct on the space station, R2 takes care of those, as well, freeing up the astronauts' time for more important responsibilities. Thus, in space and on Earth, robots manage to create healthier, happier humans.

In fact, there are robots on Earth that exist specifically to boost human health. Just as contact lenses enhance human sight, robotics can increase human mobility. People with disabilities and various forms of paralysis now have hope that they can achieve better range of motion, when before this wasn't possible. With the help of robots, scientists are working to create an exoskeleton that will attach itself to the outside of the human body, establishing a connection to the human brain. Neuroscientist Miguel Nicolelis has a dream. "We are working with the Brazilian government, who is helping fund the project. At the 2014 soccer World Cup celebrations we hope to have a Brazilian teenager with quadriplegia walk out and make the opening kick."

Explosions and car crashes may sell tickets for the summer blockbuster, but robots have so much more to offer, and much of it is positive service to humans. At the heart of the field of robotics is not the creation of people-destroying machines with evil artificial intelligence, but something much more useful. Robots aren't our enemies; instead, they are the valuable result of scientific endeavors to create safer lives for people everywhere. Read the article.
