Gustave Dore foi um gravador prolífico, artista, ilustrador e escultor, trabalhando principalmente como gravador de madeira e aço. Ele produziu mais de 100.000 esboços em sua vida e viveu até os 50 anos, com uma média de 6 esboços por dia para cada dia que viveu. Na época em que morreu, ele também ganhou mais de US $ 2 milhões, levando uma vida rica.
