An old saying has it that, while some wait for good luck, others make their
own goodluck. Using specific examples from the text, explain how this
saying applies to Vladek. Give at least 3 supporting details.

Answers

Answer 1

Hello. This question is about the graphical novel "Maus", however, you did not put the passage to which this question refers, so my answer below refers to the complete work. I hope it helps you.

Answer and Explanation:

The saying shown above applies to the whole story of Vladek, from his marriage to his survival in the holocaust and reunion with his wife.

At the beginning of the story, we can see that Vladek did not wait for luck to fall into his hands, but it was after a good job and an advantageous marriage for him. This gave Vladek a life without needs and with extreme comfort, but all of this was achieved with his effort and not with luck.

Vladek also managed to spend a lot of time without being caught by the Nazis, as he was proactive in finding hiding places that would keep him and his wife safe, even the moment of their capture is made during an attempt by Vladek to flee to a country free from Nazism that , although it did not work, it is an example of his proactivity and the ability to make his own luck.

However, the moment when this saying becomes more evident when Vladek is in a concentration camp and uses all his wits to make this moment less deadly. He uses every opportunity he has. He teaches English to the concentration camp leader to have some privileges like food and clothing and learns a new profession to stay in a less depressing and exploitative sector of the concentration camp.

Which two definitions of the word blessing does the pun
in this excerpt rely on?
approval from someone in charge
a religious ceremony called a christening
encouragement from a friend
grace said at a meal
something that brings one happiness

Answers

B. A religious ceremony called a christening

E. Something that brings one happiness

Oscar Wilde's comical play "The Importance of Being Ernest" revolves around the character of one gentleman John Worthing and his 'imaginary' alter-identity Ernest. John 'Jack' Worthing makes up the imaginary identity of Ernest whenever he wants to escape society and its responsibilities that he finds constricting and at times, absurd. And it was 'Ernest' that makes it possible for him to enjoy his life how he wants to.

In the given excerpt from Act II, we see Jack asking the rector Chasuble to be rechristened. The use of the pun "blessing" in this excerpt is suggestive of the literal sense, the religious ceremony where babies are christened in front of God and the parents. It also means something that brings happiness and joy to a person.

The two definitions of the word blessing that the pun  in this excerpt relies on are:

A religious ceremony called a christeningSomething that brings one happiness

Pun is the usage of words in which their several meanings are explored. In this excerpt, we see the young man Jack approach Chasuble to be rechristened.

The reference to Blessing by Miss Prism points to the fact that the christening ceremony was an obvious blessing.

When Chasuble used the word Blessing he meant that it could bring one happiness instead of bitter trials.

So, in their usage of the word, they explored its several meanings.

Explain. She turned her head as there was a light dignified knocking at the front door. I went out and opened it. Gatsby, pale as death, with his hands plunged like weights in his coat pockets, was standing in a puddle of water glaring tragically into my eyes. With his hands still in his coat pockets he stalked by me into the hall, turned sharply as if he were on a wire, and disappeared into the living-room. It wasnt a bit funny. Aware of the loud beating of my own heart I pulled the door to against the increasing rain. For half a minute there wasnt sound. Then from the living-room I heard a sort of choking murmur and part of a laugh, followed by Daisys voice on a clear artificial note:I certainly am awfully glad to see you again.A pause; it endured horribly. I had nothing to do in the hall, so I went into the room.Gatsby, his hands still in his pockets, was reclining against the mantelpiece in a strained counterfeit of perfect ease, even of boredom. His head leaned back so far that it rested against theface of a defunct mantelpiece clock, and from this position his distraught eyes stared down at Daisy, who was sitting, frightened but graceful, on the edge of a stiff chair.Weve met before, muttered Gatsby. His eyes glanced momentarily at me, and hislips parted with an abortive attempt at a laugh. Luckily the clock took this moment to tilt dangerously at the pressure of his head, whereupon he turned and caught it with trembling fingers and set it back in place. Then he sat down, rigidly, his elbow onthe arm of the sofa and his chin in his hand.Im sorry about the clock, he said.My own face had now assumed a deep tropical burn. I couldnt muster up a single commonplace out of the thousand in my head. Its an old clock, I told them idiotically. I think we all believed for a moment that it had smashed in pieces on the floor. We havent met for many years, said Daisy, her voice as matter-of-fact as it could ever be.Five years next November. The automatic quality of Gatsbys answer set us all back at least another minute. I had them both on their feet with the desperate suggestion that they help me make tea in the kitchen when the demoniac Finn brought it in on a tray.Amid the welcome confusion of cups and cakes a certain physical decency established itself. Gatsby got himself into a shadow and, while Daisy and I talked, looked conscientiously from one to the other of us with tense, unhappy eyes. However, as calmness wasnt an end in itself, I made an excuse at the first possible moment, and got to my feet.Where are you going? demanded Gatsby in immediate alarm.Ill be back.Ive got to speak to you before you go.He followed me wildly into the kitchen, closed the door, and whispered: Oh, God! in a miserable way. Whats the matter? This is a terrible mistake, he said, shaking his head from side to side, a terrible, terrible mistake.Youre just embarrassed, thats all, and luckily I added: Daisys embarrassed too.Shes embarrassed? he repeated incredulously. Just as much as you are" It was time I went back. While the rain continued it had seemed like the murmur of their voices, rising and swelling a little now and then with gusts of emotion. But in the new silence I felt that silence had fallen within the house too.I went inafter making every possible noise in the kitchen, short of pushing over the stovebut I dont believe they heard a sound. They were sitting at either end of the couch, looking at each other as if some question had been asked, or was in the air, and every vestige of embarrassment was gone. Daisys face was smeared with tears, and when I came in she jumped up and began wiping at it with her handkerchief before a mirror. But there was a changein Gatsby that was simply confounding. He literally glowed; without a word or a gesture of exultation a new well-being radiated from him and filled the little room.Oh, hello old sport, he said, as if he hadnt seen me for years.
