देश को स्वच्छ रखने के लिए देश ने स्वच्छ अभियान की मुहीम शुरू करने का निर्णय किया। स्वच्छ भारत अभियान 1999 से चल रहा है और इसके पूर्व इसका नामांकन ग्रामीण स्वछता अभियान के अनुसार रखा गया था। परन्तु प्रधानमंत्री मनमोहन सिंह ने इस परियोजना में कुछ परिवर्तन करके इस योजना का नाम निर्मल भारत अभियान रख दिया था। स्वच्छ भारत अभियान को 2014 सितम्बर को केंद्रीय मंत्रिमंडल से इसको स्वीकृति दी गयी थी। स्वच्छ भारत अभियान का उद्घाटन प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्रमोदी द्वारा गाँधी जयंती के दिन 2014 को किया गया था।
